Getting to Understand Low Back Pain
Low back pain is a common, painful condition affecting the lower portion of the spine. Low back pain can be chronic, hurtful, and disrupt everyday life. It affects a great number of people: more than 3 million cases in the United States per year.
Low back pain is caused by injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain). Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, fracture, ruptured disk, or arthritis.
Many people develop low back pain from workplace injury. Work-related injuries don’t have to be caused from a single event – they are often due to repetitive stress (doing the same thing over and over again). The lower portion of the spine is susceptible to these kind of stress injuries.
Low back pain could also develop from an automobile accident injury. After such an event, your spine and muscles might have been injured even if you are not currently in pain. Low back pain is a common result.
